Health Hacks for Weird Times
In addition to being a Tantra Teacher, I am a Research-Nerd, so here's what I've learned about how to stay healthy during Corona times:
---Take incredible care of yourself...Give yourself permission to go to bed early! You probably know about the stress hormone cortisol, and how much damage it can do, (not only to your immunity, but to your organs and testosterone levels!). Cortisol ONLY gets reabsorbed during sleep between 10pm-midnight so it's important to be asleep during that time-frame.
I don't eat sugar or drink alcohol, (because they both feed viruses and suppress the immune system). Someone recently asked me how I'm able to relax if I don't drink alcohol! I found this so telling, about how important alcohol is to most people. And yet, it's so bad for our health in the long run. I'm not gonna lie & say I don't miss it!! But we're in weird times, so to stress-relieve I "hard-exercise" regularly. Wearing down the anxiety-gremlins is so important! Secondly I use CBD, meditation, breathwork, & yoga. These have been lifesavers for me.
---I take well-researched, high-quality supplements: (ranked here in order of importance imho) *BRANDS MATTER though! There is a lot of GARBAGE out there in the supplement industry. There are only a FEW brands that consistently test their batches for purity, and have strict quality control and toxin-free shipping standards.
The ONLY brands I'm confident in, after all my research are Ron Teagarden's Dragon Herbs, Premier Research Labs, Gaia, Healthforce, Thorne, and Pure Encapsulations. If you can't find these online, I can guide you to where to get them.
#1. Vitamin D3 (which should be paired with vit K2 for maximum absorption).
BRANDS MATTER: I love the Premier Research Labs brand for their dedication to research and batch testing. Experts recommend 3000-10,000IU daily.
MANY people are deficient in Vitamin D. Vit D has been shown to protect against acute respiratory infections, and it has been repeatedly been shown to be safe.
Here's some science:
Vitamin-D and COVID-19:
"A role for vitamin D, in the response to COVID-19 infection could be twofold. First, vitamin D supports production of antimicrobial peptides in the respiratory epithelium, thus making infection with the virus and development of COVID-19 symptoms less likely. Second, vitamin D might help to reduce the inflammatory response to infection with SARS-CoV-2. Deregulation of this response, especially of the renin-angiotensin system, is characteristic of COVID-19 and degree of overactivation is associated with poorer prognosis. Vitamin D is known to interact with a protein in this pathway - angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) - which is also exploited by SARS-CoV-2 as an entry receptor. While SARS-CoV-2 downregulates expression of ACE2, vitamin D promotes expression of this gene."
"Rose Anne Kenny (Trinity College Dublin, University of Dublin, Ireland) led the cross-sectional study into mortality and vitamin D status and is the lead investigator of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). She is adamant that the recommendations from all public health bodies should be for the population to take vitamin D supplements during this pandemic.
"The circumstantial evidence is very strong", she proclaims regarding the potential effect on COVID-19 outcomes. Adding, "we don't have randomised controlled trial evidence, but how long do you want to wait in the context of such a crisis? We know vitamin D is important for musculoskeletal function, so people should be taking it anyway". Kenny recommends that, at the very least, vitamin D supplements are given to care home residents unless there is an extremely good reason not to do so."
Does Vitamin D Status Impact Mortality From SARS-CoV-2 Infection?:
"Vitamin D deficiency is a major global public health problem in all age groups. It has been estimated that in excess of one billion people worldwide have vitamin D deficiency.... Vitamin D is a pluripotent hormone that modulates the innate and adaptive immune response. Vitamin D influences several immune pathways, with the net effect of boosting mucosal defenses while simultaneously dampening excessive inflammation. Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for and/or a driver of the exaggerated and persistent inflammation that is a hallmark of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with an increased risk of respiratory infections such as respiratory syncytial virus infection, tuberculosis and influenza."
"Our findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency may partly explain the geographic variations in the reported case fatality rate of COVID-19, implying that supplementation with vitamin D may reduce the mortality from this pandemic. However, as commonly suggested in the lay press, high-dose vitamin D appears to have a limited role in the treatment of patients with severe COVID-19 disease."
The Role of Vitamin D in the Prevention of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Infection and Mortality:
"In conclusion, we found significant crude relationships between vitamin D levels and the number COVID-19 cases and especially the mortality caused by this infection. The most vulnerable group of population for COVID-19, the aging population, is also the one that has the most deficit Vitamin D levels."
"Vitamin D has already been shown to protect against acute respiratory infections and it was shown to be safe."
#2. ZINC. Zinc prevents viruses from being able to enter and replicate in the cells.
BRANDS MATTER: So for lozenges, I use the Zand brand. And for capsules l recommend the Dragon Herbs brand product called, "Super Ant". It's called Super Ant because it's literally crushed up ants (in capsules)! Ants are the highest source of zinc on the planet. If you come see me, you can pop a capsule at the start of your session and be able to boast that you've eaten bugs! :)
Here's the science:
Zinc Lozenges and the Common Cold: A Meta-analysis Comparing zinc acetate and zinc gluconate, and the role of zinc dosage: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5418896/
Modulating The Immune Response by Oral Zinc Supplementation: A Single Approach for Multiple Diseases: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7079749/
"A pooled analysis of four trials in which continuous supplementation was investigated confirmed that zinc is efficient for the prevention of pneumonia. Here, zinc supplementation reduced the incidence of pneumonia in children in developing countries by 41%."
"In addition, a recent study indicates that zinc may also be helpful for the elderly. Serum zinc concentrations were negatively associated with the incidence of pneumonia in nursing home residents, indicating that zinc supplementation may be a measure to prevent pneumonia in the elderly."
"Therapeutic zinc supplementation in diseases such as acute lower respiratory infection, chronic hepatitis C, diarrhea, shigellosis, leprosy, tuberculosis, and acute cutaneous leishmaniasis is beneficial."
The Role of Zinc in Antiviral Immunity:
"...[Z]inc treatment applied at a therapeutic dose and in the right form has the potential to drastically improve the clearance of both chronic and acute viral infections, as well as their accompanying pathologies and symptoms. Consequently, the role of zinc as an antiviral can be separated into 2 categories: 1) zinc supplementation implemented to improve the antiviral response and systemic immunity in patients with zinc deficiency, and 2) zinc treatment performed to specifically inhibit viral replication or infection-related symptoms."
Quercetin is a bioflavanoid and an immune modulator. It's best paired with zinc, because it has shown efficacy as a zinc ionophore. Ionophore means "ion carrier" and facilitates an "ions transport" across a cell membrane - Basically, it helps Zinc enter cells, where zinc then inhibits viral replication. This is what hydrochloroquin does as well, but quercitin, licorice or green tea do it without all the drama. ;)
BRANDS MATTER: So I recommend either Premier Quercetin capsules, or the Pure Encapsulations brand. Premier Green Tea Extract (in capsules cos the liquid is really bitter) or licorice tincture also do the same thing.
Here's some science:
It has been theorized, that the reason that hydroxychloroquine may have a beneficial effect on COVID-19 patients is primarily because it acts as a zinc ionophore. However, in addition to being a pharmaceutical drug for which you need a prescription, (please don't drink the fishtank cleaner type!) hydroxychloroquine has the potential for some serious side effects including heart arrhythmia and death.
Quercetin is a much safer and more natural alternative. In addition to acting as a zinc ionophore, quercetin has powerful anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Bear in mind that many of the studies demonstrating the antiviral properties of quercetin were done in vitro (in a test tube or culture dish) and so it's difficult to extrapolate its potential efficacy against viruses in the human body. A single human trial found a fairly significant reduction of influenza infection for people over the age of 40. I've not found any in vivo studies that have looked at the combination of quercetin and zinc supplementation to inhibit viral infection.
#4. CBD and CBG...I'm a huge CBD/CBG nerd.
After many many hours spend researching, my question is, "What DOESN'T CBD do?!" The amount of studies and articles about CBD and its effect on Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Pain management, inflammation, cognitive function, dental decay, PTSD, anxiety and depression is incredible...and now I find it's been proven to support the immune system and build resistance to colds and flus!! CBD has even been shown to beat MRSA and Sepsis (antibiotic-resistant super bugs).
BRANDS MATTER: In blood tests, the brand I use (and that I now sell if you want any), is proven to be 5-10x more potent than any other CBD on the market. The brand is called Prime My Body and you can buy some from me, or from any of their distributors. (It's a MLM, which I normally hate, but their product is so excellent I joined)
Here's some science demonstrating that CBD alleviates lung pathology:
Here's an article describing RSV and Coronavirus: relation: https://academic.oup.com/jid/article/185/9/1338/938156
"This study indicated that endocannabinoid signaling regulates the inflammatory response to RSV infection, and is a potential therapeutic candidate for alleviation of RSV-associated immunopathology." [RSV stands for Respiratory Syncytial Virus infection...basically a virus that is like Corona, and causes a similar type of respiratory distress].
#5. Natural Anti-Virals. There are only 3 natural anti-virals that I'm aware of: Oregano Oil, Olive Leaf Extract, and Garlic. I personally haven't found Garlic to be as effective as the first 2. If you run hot, take the Olive Leaf, as it's a cooling herb. If you tend to run cold take Oregano, as it's a warming herb. Olive Leaf has shown to be the most effective one against Covid-19
BRANDS MATTER: So I recommend the Gaia brand (get the capsules, cos the liquid is gross) or the Premier Research Labs brand. You will want to already have this on hand in case you contract the virus because the SOONER you treat, the more effective the results will be.
I love to research, and I hope what I've learned will benefit you. I hope these health hacks will ensure that we can still be close, and yet remain safe and healthy !!! :)
